UV TREATMENT OF MILDEW

The use of ultra-violet (UV) light for the treatment of fungal diseases in viticulture is very interesting. This is what I know so far:

  • it is not widely used anywhere, i.e. it is a new technology. Source: observation
  • it is an approach that is proving economical in some crops (eg berries). Source: discussions with advisor colleauges.
  • it is often paired with autonomous mobile power units (i.e. robotic tractors). Source: observation.
  • for best results/ for it to work at all, it needs to be applied at night. Source: UK wine show podcast ep 848.
  • there is some research suggesting that it can effect the taste profile of wines. In particular, the green flavours, which one might want in particular whites. Source: UK wine show podcast ep 849.

Sweden doesn’t have the issues with mildew that other regions of the world have, mainly because of the use of modern PIWI hybrid varieties. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t issues. Pinot varieties are of high interest to national producers, given its success as a cool climate wine, but they generally come with mildew issues. Being able to treat mildew with UV aligns well with Sweden’s sustainable approach to viticulture.
